tuesday shoesday: sparkle.

i am having an internal debate about wedding shoes. frivolous and silly, i know...but some times the bride in my just takes over (this often happens when mr. f is sports center or reading the NE patriots blog)

but the debate is over weather i should go plain and simple and classic or fun and colorful and sparkly. so i have to say, i love the way this little guy from anthropologie captures both elements. it's like the mullet of dancing shoes: business on the toes, party on the ankle.

what do you guys think? do they get the job done?

tuesday shoesday: belles & whistles

confession: i get more junk email than any one i know. i sign up for every possible mailing list out there. every company on the planet has my contact info. mr. frederickson thinks it's dispicable, i however, can't get enough. i love being in the know - even if it's just about the goings on at pottery barn and city market.

but, every once in a while the value in these emails becomes overwhelmingly apparent. saturday was one of these instances. kate spade sent me an email and she told me about her fabulous new wedding line: belles & whistles. {i mean seriously, kate, how cute and fabulous are you?} so since kate took the time to tell me of this launch, i felt the need to spend several hours perusing not only the website, but also the style me pretty archives to try and decide how kate would influence me and what kind of bride i am going to be: the classic kind? the sparkly kind? the colorful kind? or the kind that hides cute little slippers under layers and layers of tulle? decisions decisions.
so, while i might not know what shoes to wear for the big day (details, details) i know that i love my gmail account and all the stylish folks that email me.

tuesday shoesday: forcing spring

so friends, as you may know, yesterday was the first day of spring. yes, believe it or not, it was! here in vermont the snow and sleet came down with reckless abdanon and made us use every bit of inner sunshine to get through the day. you know what else helped? these summery little numbers from the queen of all things summer - lilly pulitzer. you know what else helped? staying up until all hours of the night riding my closet of all grey and black, wool and velvet and any shoe that dares cover my ankles. until this morning when i had nothing to wear. whoops.

tuesday shoesday: mud season prep.

wooo hooo! we did it. we made it through the long dark tunnel. and to celebrate the arrival of march - the muddiest of months, i bring you some colorful - and puddle friendly - footwear. i don't know about you, but my feet are sick and tired of being cooped up in winter boots. so baring my pasty little ankles for the first time this spring will be a very welcome change! what about you? besides shoes, what do you look most forward to in march?

tuesday shoesday: mardi gras

i am back from a whirlwind trip to the big easy. all work, little play, but an amazing time nonetheless. {bonus, i got to see one of my faves cross the finish line at the rock and roll marathon! and she rocked it!}

it will take me a few days to catch up on all the brilliant blogging that has come and gone over the last week, but as a quick nod to the colors of mardi gras, i must share with you this festive footwear. these beauties, from bhldn, anthropologie's new and oh so fabulous bridal line, have me reminiscing about bourbon street, craving spring and rethinking my wedding colors all at the same time....that's a multitasking shoe, if you ask me!

tuesday shoesday: to the moon...

i have many a memory from my childhood that involves these boots. all the parents in town had them, and could stand for hours in hockey rinks and at the bottom of ski mountains...watching their kids attempts to become olympic athletes no matter the temperature. and while the moms and dads complained about cold hands and frostbitten noses, no one uttered a word about cold toes. and i know now that that had a whole lot to do with the magical and oh so fashionable footwear known as the moon boot.

now, i went through a phase (a pretty long one in fact) where i refused to put anything but the trendiest footwear on my feet, and at times wouldn't even be seen with my mom as she walked down the street in these. but, as per usual, mom was right, and these toasty, fluffy boots are just what i am dreaming about on this very cold and very snowy tuesday shoesday....

tuesday shoesday: the oxford

my mom has been on the quest for the perfect pair of oxfords. so much so, that she has taken to just emailing links from around the web...no subject line, no text, just a link. i take this to mean that she wants some feedback. although, i have to admit, i have been less than helpful. for me, there is a very brief interlude between flip flop and boot season and that has long since passed.

but, in her honor (and to celebrate her birthday month) i feel it is important to give this classic and yet oh so trendy shoe a little love on this tuesdayshoesday. plus, she did all the work and online searching for me, and i will take advantage of any excuse to make a picture collage!

what do you think? any favorites? anyone else still pining for doc marteens to come back in style? (please, say yes or that was a major overshare on my part...)

i didn't have a spare moment yesterday to think about shoes (it was just one of those days) that is until i got home and had the boden usa catalog waiting for me in my mailbox. never in my life had a 5' x 7' mailing brought me such joy. the pages were filled with cozy sweaters, colorful tunics, leopard print accessories, and these perfect party heels...just what i needed on a hectic tuesday.

so, thank you boden, for understanding how important catalog shopping is here in vermont and for delivering this lovely winter version of a festive party shoe (although to be honest, we all know that in these parts you have to wear your ll bean boots till you get to the party...) oh, i can not wait for party season!

VTuesday Shoesday

like rose, last week's talented guest blogger, my love for shoes began when i was just a little girl. although i have to admit, that i was certainly not as pragmatic as she, as my love for frilly inappropriate shoes began in my dress up box, not on the playground or at the state fair. i would spend hours and hours in a little fantasy world pretending i was a princess or a super hero, or a famous chef or just someone fabulous. however, the one constant of these personalities was that they always donned one magnificent pair of shoes - gifted to me by rose's great aunt barb. and they looked a little something like these (although, kick me if they were $700 valentinos!)

and if it were totally up to me, i would have stayed home today on this tuesday shoesday and played dress up. because, to be honest, this chilly, gloomy tuesday needs a little something to spice things up....

VTuesday Shoesday - Guest Blogger

We are shaking things up here on this Tuesday Shoesday. Ladies & Gents - meet, my cousin Rose, LoveVermont's youngest reader and a budding fashionista! Thanks to Rose and her lovely mom for sharing their insight on footwear...

* * * * * *

My name is Rose, but most people call me Rosie. I’m just about 17 months. My mom’s been tracking LoveVermont and its VTuesday Shoesday feature regularly– and, because I’m pretty much at her side 24/7, I, too, have become obsessed. I wonder if I’m LoveVermont’s youngest fan?

I’m pretty obsessed with shoes. It’s hard to say whether I was born this way or if it is the influence of VTuesday Shoesday. But, regardless, I spend a lot of my day moving shoes around, trying them on – and, taking them off. And, just to prove how obsessed I am, you should know that while I’m super prolific with my sign language (oh, and apparently, my typing), I am a girl of very few words--but, “shoes” is one of them.

Anyhow, while you are all busy thinking about what clogs, boots and super cute flats to don this season, I’m here to tell you that I’ve got it figured it out. Yup, pink Converse high tops (I’ve heard some big people call them Chucks.). They are incredibly versatile. As you’ll see from the photos (My mom is obsessed with taking photos of me – but who can blame her?), they look fantastic with both blue jeans and dresses with snazzy tights. I’m guessing that many of you are thinking that you can’t pull it off as well as I can – but, give it a try.

i nearly ran over mr. frederickson last night as i rushed towards the window at monelle to catch a glimpse of these candy apple red beauties. and when i got there, they were every bit as perfect as i had imagined them to be (from all the way across the street) i practically kissed the glass. i mean can you even imagine a happier pair of shoes? these would certainly get my academic year off to a stylish start and carry me all the way though the holidays and maybe even into the long dark days of march...i'm just saying, they might be a good investment

mr. frederickson and i are back in vermont and couldn't be happier. after a summer of gypsydom, it feels so divine to be back in our home state for longer than 48 hours!

and last night, to celebrate our return, we just wandered around our little city, feeling so grateful to be here. we talked and talked and talked and made plans for the fall. he got excited about football season and sunday fundays, and i got excited for foliage drives and apple cider - clearly compromise becomes increasingly important this time of year. but, one thing that we both agreed on is that we need to tackle this whole hiking thing. we talk about it a lot, but have yet to get strap our boots on (and fill our backpacks with the necessary kitchen knives and pepper spray) and travel into the woods that our little state is oh so famous for...

{view from green mountain via hidden vermont}

so, first on the to do list is footwear - aka, the oh so stylish hiking boot. jimmy k didn't mention it in his eloquent man week tuesday shoesday post, but i think if challenged, he would certainly agree that it should be added to the list. some current options:

{shoes by asolo & merrell}

so, you hiking enthusiasts out there...any thoughts or advice for us flatlanders as we venture into the woods? we need help. and lots of it.

my friend seb hit the nail on the head with her post today. i have to wholehearedly agree with her sentiment that that fall is a really fabulous time of year in vermont. as she so eloquently wrote, there are few things better than those chilly nights at the end of august that remind you that fall is right around the corner.

in my family, we are summer people, so signs of fall used to fill us with disappointment (my mom used to call it the f-word) and wish that you could rewind to the early days of summer that were filled with so much freedom and excitement about what's to come. but recently, i have come to learn that with this change in season come so many good things - cool nights & warm days, sweatshirts & shorts, open windows & blankets, scarves & boots, apples & squash. it's a season in transition, and in my opinion, that is a great place to be.

today, however, thanks to seb, my fall focus is on boots. september is all about getting new back to school shoes, and really there is no better option here in vermont than a new pair of boots. boot season is a long one, so it's important to find the perfect pair...not to high, or low and really they should be the perfect shade of brown...yes, it is a daunting task, but, one that i am ready and willing to tackle.

VTuesday Shoesday: The Man Edition

Thanks to the one, the only Jimmy K for this absolutely perfect man edition of Tuesday Shoesday. (Please note that I have relinquished my tradition of using only lower case letters to appease the author, as that styled decision really gets his goat.) Also important to note is that Jimmy K is primarily responsible for my love of Mr. Frederickson & Vermont, for which I am forever grateful. Also, just an FYI, he followed the advice of yesterday's post and enjoyed a few IPAs to encourage the creative process.To establish some continuity between business as usual at Love Vermont and man week, I thought I'd continue the tradition of Tuesday Shoesday with a familiar format: a list. Although men find them somewhat intolerable (especially if it's a to-do list), we're generally more comfortable with power rankings…so here goes. You'll have to forgive me for not contributing the most manly of man week posts, there's only so much a boy can do with shoesday.

  1. Bean Boots – Absolute classics. Timeless in every sense. Their full warranty – while questionably sensible from a financial standpoint – represents a commitment to quality that is much appreciated by Vermonters. Like other Bean products, they won’t fall out of style; just consult our parents’ mudroom for evidence. My personal favorite pair: the rubber mocs (see above) which combat mud season with the best of them.
  2. Birkenstocks – The Germans have engineered some pretty impressive things over the years – luxury cars, uniquely shaped beer glasses, counter-attacks and cork-soled sandals that feel like they were built by and for Vermonters. Birks-wearers are likely to either still have a pair from the 1970s, or sport a dancing bears sticker on the back of their Subaru or both. Nevertheless, the iconic shoes earn extra points for their high ranking in the surprisingly competitive sandals-that-can-be-worn-with-wool-socks category.
  3. Merrells – They will serve you equally well on an afternoon hike as at just about any social gathering from September to April, which is just slightly longer than bourbon season. For what it’s worth, Keens might be less versatile, but could earn you more trail-cred.
  4. Dansko clogs – Seem to be quite popular in the Science and English departments of high schools all over the state.
  5. Crocs – A distant relative of Birkenstocks, Crocs are almost as ergonomically appealing and as versatile. The heel strap adds a new dimension and instantly converts these foam creations into the perfect shoe for a lazy float down a river (thanks, helm), or a quick getaway from the fashion police.
  6. Honorable mention: Bike shoes & Tevas/Chacos. Bike shoes – I’ve heard they really do help you generate power more efficiently on a road bike, so their popularity shouldn’t be surprising considering Vermonters emphasis on energy conservation. Even though you may have helped save the planet by biking to work, it won’t be so easy to sneak in a bit late. Tevas/Chacos – Considering the how-to-pronounce-Teva debate has nearly broken up my extended family, I have to give the edge to Chacos, though both are excellent at giving blisters.

as my mom predicted - clogs are back, as she knew they would be. and they are back in a big way this fall. while the trend is all over the map (tall, short, peeptoe, lace up) i have a soft spot in my heart for the original swedish version by hasbeens. classic, colorful and now, trendy. i think a pair of these just made their way onto my "what i need in order to have a fabulous and stylish fall in vermont" shopping list. if only mom had just held onto hers, it could have been crossed off the list by now!
